The other thing is the original Top Gun is so full of 1980s tropes that I wondered how it would translate to a decent sequel in 2022. I've watched with great and immense displeasure what has been happening to both Star Trek and Star Wars for a long time, and how badly they've been mangled.
It's how Hollywood has handled sequels, particularly old franchises / old movies for over a decade. I would have thought some other big movies he has had in the 80s and 90s would have gotten him the $100+ million opening. It's also amusingly Tom Cruise's biggest release. The movie somehow paid it's dues and respects to the original, aviation in general, while also forging ahead. So I was very happy to see that Top Gun: Maverick was great.
The original Top Gun was also about as 1980s as you can get. It makes me think of Tom Hanks' greyhound, which had a very subdued release due to COVID. I think Tom was apprehensive about releasing it back then because of the state of movie-going at the time. I remember it was slated to come out in 2020 but COVID hit Hollywood pretty hard and it got pushed back. I had apprehension about a sequel for a movie almost 40 years past the original which came out in 1986.
